To get the Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée (Protected Designation of Origin), the wines must comes from grapes harvested in the area of production of the Alsatian vineyard, in “terroir” strictly delimited”.  The National Institute of Appellations of Origin Controlled (INAO) defined these terroir of production and protect them by strict rules, especially for the management of the vines. Only 5 grape varieties are allowed to be produced in the AOC (PDO) Alsace Grand Cru.

  • Sylvaner (Minimum alcohol content: 11°)
  • Muscat (Minimum alcohol content : 11°)
  • Riesling (Minimum alcohol content: 11°)
  • Pinot Gris (Minimum alcohol content : 12,5°)
  • Gewurztraminer(Minimum alcohol content: 12,5°).

Their yields must be 55 to 66 hectoliters (1450 to 1750 gallons) maximum per hectare.

Vendanges Tardives (Late Harvest) and Sélections de Grains Nobles (Noble Berries Selection)

Some few rare and prestigious mentions can complete the Alsace Appellation Grand Cru :

Geographic location

On the south side of the Mittelbergheim hill, who peaks at 320 meters, the Zotzenberg has a shape of a basin. It benefits from a long period of sunshine being exposed east and south. Its surface of 36 hectares (89 acres) consists of marls and limestone, which both can handle humidity and drought.   Mostly known for its Sylvaner in the old days, this terroir also allows the Gewurztraminer, the Pinot Gris and the Riesling to be expressed, on an exceptionnal way.

Limpind, light green robe with hints of yellow. Nice brightness, brilliant. Limpide, robe vert-clair avec des nuances de jaune. Bel éclat, brillant. Wine to aerate, it reveals aromas slowly like white flowers, acacia, lime tree and green apple. Dry in the mouth, it’s a classic Riesling, fresh and well-structured. To enjoy now, but will be perfect in 5 to 7 years. To serve with grilled fishes, seafood, white meats with creamy mushroom sauce, or with pie.

PINOT GRIS VENDANGES TARDIVES ZEYSSOLFF 2018
(20€ the 50cl bottle – 28€ the 75cl bottle )

Geographic location

The semi-continental climate of Alsace, with its low rainfall and its remarkable sunshine during the fall, enables the grapes to dry on the vines and get noble rot from the Botrytis. This climate allows late harvest – way later than the normal harvest from Riesling, Muscat, Pinot Gris and Gewurztraminer grapes, when they offer all their richness.

This pinot gris comes from the town of Heiligenstein where it grows on a clayey soil. The grapes are picked from 35 years-old vines, by hand. The development of the noble rot from Botrytis cinereal and the phenomenon of concentration gives this wine its smoothness.

Description of the wine

Clear yellow gold robe. This pinot gris reveals rape pineapple notes, currant and dried apricot. In the mouth we feel aroma of figs in sirup and quince marmalade. The wine is long and silky on the palate.

Wine that you can drink now or to keep, with an aging potential at least from 10 to 15 years.

This pink skinned small berry Gewuztraminer is from Gertwiller. It’s one of the specialties of the village. The grapes are picked from 45 years-old vines, by hand. PINOT GRIS SÉLECTIONS GRAINS NOBLES
ZEYSSOLFF 2015
(30€ the 50cL bottle and 43€ the 75cl bottle)

Geographic location

The semi-continental climate of Alsace, with its low rainfall and its remarkable sunshine during the fall, enables the grapes to dry on the vines and get noble rot from the Botrytis. This climate allows late harvest – way later than the normal harvest from Riesling, Muscat, Pinot Gris and Gewurztraminer grapes, when they offer all their richness.

Wines with this appelation are harvested by hand and produced from berries with noble rot only. This extra concentration makes the intensity of the grape more discreet, in favor of a powerness, a complexity and a remarkable length in the mouth.

Wines named “Sélection de Grains Nobles” must present a very high level in sugar at the harvest, and can be sold only after 18 months of ageing.

Description of the wine

Straw yellow robe.

Young wine with a great concentration. Nose with a big intensity, over-ripeness flavours, quince fruit jelly, date, candied orange. In the mouth, the wine is dense, fleshy. The palette of aromas is splendid,  with a candied dominant feature, apricot fruit jelly, honey and quince. Very nice balance.
